Popularised in the 15th and 19th century as a spice of high value. Used by the wealthy of that period as a mouth freshener. Nutmeg has a distinctive pungent fragrance and a warm slightly sweet taste. It is used to flavour many kinds of baked goods, puddings, potatoes, meats, sausages, sauces, vegetables, and such beverages as eggnog.
